She Walks
She turns away
Her strides even
Measured
The echo of her footsteps
Etched in powder white snow
Her shoulders broad
A shelf for her thoughts
Her head bows
A lock of chestnut hair
Falls past her shell-like ear
She does not move
To secure the errant wisp
Her brow furrows
As she purposely places
One foot
In front
Of the other

Late Bloomer
I took it down
The scaling bloom
That clung onto the wall
Bit by bit, I pulled it off
I watched its blossoms fall.
It used to flutter in the wind
And shimmer green in May
And fed by burning rays of sun
It flourished day by day.
I ran outside
To cry in peace
I ran to find respite
I couldn’t run away from you
Your gaze, it held me tight.
I longed to grow as tall as you
The envy burned so bright
And so, instead of marveling
I lived with hate and spite
Each shell like leaf
A watchful eye
It saw, it heard, it knew
Of love and loss and lives unfurled
With every tale it grew.
Now the roots pulled up from earth
And ripped from red brick wall
It scales nothing, climbing ceased
And lives in green no more.

I Put on a Dress

I Put On A Dress
I put on a dress for you.
They told us to expect unusually high temperatures-
Air so humid, thick, oppressive,
Like wading through soup.
I put on a dress for you
The fabric cascaded down my legs
Soft, silk-like,
Rippling ribbons as I walked.
I put on a dress for you
In the hopes it would lift my spirits,
The sensation of lyocell, cool against my skin,
Would slice through the heft of my mood.
I put on a dress for you
But the garment wrapped around my body,
Clung to my limbs,
Sticking to the backs of my knees.
I put on a dress for you
And I stayed indoors.
